Two hearts take shape in dark sono wood to intertwine in a symbol of love. They grace a necklace by Komang Rupawan, of Bhakti Senang Hati. The dark wood pendant hangs on black cotton cords, and the necklace length can be adjusted by sliding the beads along the cords.
"My late father said that although I have a handicap, I must able to be self-sufficient," the artisan says. "When I was three months old, I had polio and could not walk and had to crawl. Then a neighbor crafted a crutch for me. I was able to go to school and eventually received my high school diploma. I paid my tuition by weaving and making jewelry items, which I sold. In 2003, I joined the Bhakti Senang Hati, where I met my wife, who had a leg amputated. Together we have three sons, and a foundation donor is sponsoring my studies in the university."
