Dressed in traditional attire, a man speaks to his people. His erect posture and assured gestures reveal his royal lineage, for he is a ruler of the kingdom of the Akpini Anyi-Gbe. Sinclair Yao Daley carves the image by hand and gives it a rich brown color with natural cola nut dye. "I named this sculpture Dagadu, which means 'great king' in the Ewe language. It is symbolic of one highly honored, a mighty one full of praise and worthy of respect," the artisan explains.
Sinclair Yao Daley has received 4 microcredit loans with 0% interest from Kiva and Novica, the first for $200 and the most recent for $300.
Sinclair was taught to carve by a master in the trade. Through him, he learned many traditional techniques which he continues to utilize.
