Immortalized in a ceramic vessel, the xoloitzcuintle was highly prized by the Aztecs. The compact, hairless breed was considered a gift from the god Xolotl. Sculpted in clay as funerary offerings, they accompanied their masters in death to aid the soul in crossing rivers of blood along the road of the dead. A member of Callinart Artists, Pina C. Martinez works in tempera to depict a stylized Aztec personage who pays tribute to the dog. She frames the work in pinewood.
