Nyoman Subrata of Indonesia hand carves this suar wood statuette of the Hindu deity Sarasvati, goddess of music, science and art. She is supported by a bird, wings outstretched, symbolizing the openness needed for creativity and learning. In her many hands she holds various gifts: a rebab (a musical instrument), a lontar or palm book (a symbol of knowledge), a genetri or bell (portraying science) and a lotus (the symbol of loveliness and purity).
The artistry of Nyoman Subrata has been featured in dozens of periodicals in Asia, Europe, and the U.S., and on PBS television.

Nyoman Subrata has received 6 microcredit loans with 0% interest from Kiva and Novica, the first for $1300 and the most recent for $2600. Proceeds were used to stock up on the materials he needs, such as various woods.
