Hibiscus Wood Theatrical Mask, "Big Nose"
Nyoman Naranata carves the mask of an ordinary man whose salient characteristic is its rather long nose. Carved by hand of hibiscus wood, this bondres is a welcomed sight during dance performances.
Hibiscus wood exhibits colors ranging from white to light gray, dark gray or even black heartwood. This natural occurrence can rarely be replicated, making each carving exceptionally unique. The mask is light weight and has a a wonderful warm color that in neutral without being boring. Unlike so many masks, this one is serene and beautiful, rather than frightening. I love having it in the living room.

"A piece you want to touch as well as see"

Beautifully executed. The skill in carving the face is extraordinary. I find myself often wanting to run my fingers over the nose, the lips the cheek to marvel at the soft sleek curves and defined edges. The natural variation in Hibiscus wood means receiving a very unique sculpture and I find it a joy to discover new details. I am definitely adding this artisan to my favorites.
