This handwoven cotton shoulder bag from Guatemala features the craftsmanship of the Mayan Ixil people. A multicolored striped body surrounds a finely striped panel embroidered with geometric motifs. Triangular patterns symbolize the country's many volcanoes, whereas the lower bird motifs, representing Tzichin, are believed to attract riches. The S-shaped symbols represent the movement of the air and of the universe, itself, flanking birds with outstretched wings that represent traveling peoples. The birds and cornstalks at the top represent harmony with nature. A zipper pocket is located on the back of this handbag, which opens with a zipper to a cotton lining in navy with a single inner zipper pocket.
