Colonial knights and castles, kings, queens and pawns challenge one another in a chess match. Adorned with finely tooled leather, this extraordinary chess set is handcrafted by Peru's Wilfredo Rios. He works in mohena wood, similar in grain to mahogany. Drawers on either side are equipped with a lock and key to hold the chess pieces between games.

Now in his eighties, Wilfredo continues to work, handcrafting each piece of his furniture with traditional techniques. He says simply, "My art is my life." In his early teens, Wilfredo learned the art of leatherwork in a workshop where most of the employees were profoundly deaf. Through the years, he worked his family out of extreme poverty and eventually opened his own workshop. He has taught many artisans but is most proud of passing this traditional Peruvian art to his brother Abel and his son Jose. Both Abel and Jose are also Novica artisans.
Wilfredo's Novica sales are his only source of income. He is in his eighties, lives alone and struggles to provide for himself. He still thinks of growing his workshop and is thankful for the dignity and income that come from working with Novica.
Wilfredo Rios has received 4 microcredit loans with 0% interest from Kiva and Novica, the first for $600 and the most recent for $2050. Proceeds were used to invest in the purchase of raw materials for his crafts business.
This artist is an elder master and continues to actively practice their craft.
