Details

"I chose these colors based on the ones the ancient Maya assigned to the cardinal points," confides Karina Mercedes Canova. "White represents the north, black is for the west, the south is yellow and east is red. The center, representing the great ceiba tree, is green." It is said the Maya goddess Ixchel took the different types of corn and spat on them to fertilize them. The she blew them out in the four directions. Canova crafts the bracelet by hand with pinewood beads and cotton threads. A sliding knot regulates the bracelet’s length.

Your Purchase Makes a Difference!

"As a designer, my main work is to make the world aware of the richness of Maya culture. Guatemala is the cradle of this unique civilization. When you choose my handbags, you are acquiring a piece of history because the Maya weaver combines creativity and tradition in every textile. This is why these handbags are unique. You are also fostering the continued use of the backstrap loom so that this art will be taught to future generations and not be lost."

Karina Mercedes Canova has received a $300 microcredit loan with 0% interest. Proceeds were used to purchase raw materials such as quality leather and hand-loomed textiles.
