Hand Painted Wood Wolf Alebrije, "Wild Wolf"
This wonderful alebrije figurine is the original creation of Mexico's Claudio Ojeda. The Oaxacan artisan carves the howling wolf by hand from cedar wood, and then paints it by hand with colorful motifs. His tail is removed during shipping for safety.
The folk art tradition of alebrijes dates back to the 1930's in Mexico City. A man named Pedro Linares was taken ill, and in his fevered dreams he saw a strange land populated with curious creatures--a donkey with wings, a rooster with bull's horns, and a lion with the head of a dog. The beasts all ran at him, shouting "alebrije! alebrije!". Upon his recovery, Linares began recreating the fantastical creatures he had seen in his dream. The art form gained popularity, and alebrijes are now made of wood as well as papier mache. The same style of painting can also be found on other (non-animal) items.

"Amazing details - Such artistry!"

Thank you Claudio! I was delighted to get this wonderful little bull -- which I am turning into a Holiday ornament for my tree. He is such a colorful little fellow and so beautifully painted. I have purchased many sets of ornaments from Claudio - to share with friends... so am very happy to have one very unique ornament just for me.

I bought these for my son to commemorate his first night on a visit to Mexico when he had to remove a scorpion from the closet. They are whimsical and beautiful!

"These are my Happy Hearts"

I got these because they were useful all year round--on the Christmas Tree, for Valentines Day, for Easter, or whatever. In between times, I just hang them in various locations around the house and it makes me happy to see them sitting on the corner of the windowsill, hanging from a decorative cabinet handle, resting in a bin of colored straw like an Easter Egg, or whatever. They are colorful, beautiful, and a pleasure to have around the house. I thought I might put one on each gift for Christmas but I got greedy and kept them all for myself. :)

"A new heirloom for our family"

Upon opening the box I got misty eyed. The ornaments are so beautifully crafted. I try to replicate Mexican Folklore when I paint terra cotta pots. It is very hard and it looks like a 4 year old painted it. For that, I truly appreciate the artistic ability of the artists. I also love the personal notes that are included. I had a rough day and your ornaments brought joy to my heart.
