An elephant heralds good fortune as it holds its trunk high. The mighty animal is dressed in floral fantasy to celebrate India's artistic legacy. Presented by Raj Kumari and Raja Ram, this sculpture features colorful stone inlay, of the type used in the Taj Mahal.
Novica sales are instrumental to this family's survival, accounting for 50 percent of their monthly income. They are a dedicated family of artisans who continually struggle to make ends meet.
Raja Ram is from Agra, home to the Taj Mahal. Like many in Agra, he learned the art of marble carving and inlay at an early age. Years later when his children were grown, he taught this art to his wife, Raj Kumari. They love this centuries-old intricate Indian craft and hope that their children and grandchildren continue it.
Raja Ram has a daily struggle to manage his chronic diabetes. It has impacted his work and the income from his workshop is diminishing. He and his wife struggle to make ends meet.
Raj Kumari and Raja Ram has received 3 microcredit loans with 0% interest from Kiva and Novica, the first for $500 and the most recent for $400.
Raj and Raja's son is grown and educated but Raj and Raja now help with the educational expenses of their two grandchildren.
The income from their workshop provides for the entire family, which includes their son and two grandchildren.
The Women's Empowerment badge is awarded to female artisans or artisan groups that are led by women.
"A fabulous piece of art!!!!"
We love this piece!! We were in India recently and purchased a similar elephant but with nowhere near the detail or beauty of this one. We are so pleased - the picture does not do justice to the beauty of this art work. Thank you NOVICA and Raj Kumari and Raja Ram!!
