Details

"Not many people know of San Mateo Ixtatán, but its traditional costume is very famous for its beauty and complexity. It's very elegant and warm, and the women wear it with great pride," says Iliana Hernández of her inspiration. The Guatemalan artisan crafts this beautiful display doll by hand with hand-woven cotton for her huipil dress and pinewood for her head, hands and feet. Her woolen hair is braided and she wears a beaded necklace. The doll wears one cent coin earrings - one displaying Guatemala's coat of arms, and the other side has the face of Fray Bartolomé de las Casas, the Dominican monk who defended the indigenous community from the abuses of the Spanish conquistadors.

The huipil blouse or dress from San Mateo Ixtatán is usually woven by hand in a vibrant colors -- the dress can take up to nine months to finish. They are also reversible and the artistry can be appreciated on either side.
