Details

Carved by hand, this exquisite sculpture is inspired by the Post-classic effigy incense holders found at the walled city of Mayapan. Nicolas Chavez Sojuel depicts a priest who wears an ornate feathered headdress crowned by a bird, as well as traditional earrings. The necklace, carved of pinewood, features a pectoral with five beads. To the Maya, the number five was related to the cardinal points plus the center, to the ceremonies that concluded the solar calendar, and to the cycles of Venus. In his hands, the priest holds a jar of water and a smoking ball of copal incense.

The Guatemalan artisan works in fragrant cedar wood to create the image. "After studying many photographs, I believe these artifacts were highly significant to our ancestors," he says. "Even today, copal incense is an important factor in Maya ceremonies."

The following pieces are removable to safeguard them during shipping: the six pieces of the headdress, six wooden feathers at the back, and the hands.
