Details

By Rita Addo Zakour, this imposing mask depicts Queen Idia, mother of Oba (king) Esigie who ruled Benin in the 16th century. The king is said to have worn the mask around his neck to drive away the forces of evil. The artisan names her hand-carved mask Abanbo, an Akan word which means "protection."
