This beautiful decorative vase done in the Oaxacan style of barro negro is handcrafted by artisan Anakarem of Oaxaca, Mexico. The vase has a narrow neck and wide body that tapers down toward the base. The body of the base is carved with a repeating motif of open leaves, allowing light to shine through the vase. A ring of vines is etched into the top of the vase body just below the neck. The vase is a deep black, a result of the specific black clay and firing and burnishing process used for this type of pottery.
As the vase is baked in a wood-fired oven, the interior and bottom surfaces that are not burnished may contain a minimal amount of smoke residue that could transfer to other surfaces. Such residue is easily wiped clean with a dry cloth.
