The talented Made Mulyani of Bali creates this elegantly hand-carved mask of Sang Jogor Manik. The natural variegation in the acacia wood enhances the detail on the mask, and dark paint accentuates the creature's pupils.
In Balinese Hinduism, Sang Jogor Manik is one of the three gatekeepers at the crossroads between heaven and hell. They are judges in both life and in the hereafter. Sang Suratma is the one who carries a manuscript which is the recorded deeds of each person while on earth; Sang Dorokala is the one who talks to the souls while they arrive at the crossroads, and Jogor Manik is Hell's guardian, who tells the souls where to go.
